Boeung Ket played out a pulsating 2-2 draw against Phnom Penh Crown in the first Cambodian Classic Match of the season at the Smart RSN Stadium last Saturday.
Andres Nieto’s stunner put Phnom Penh Crown in front inside ten minutes of the play, but an own goal from center-back Takaki Ose and Sieng Chanthea’s late strike handed Boeung Ket a 2-1 lead at the interval.
In the half way of the second half, Lim Pisoth bagged an equalizer to rescue a point for the home side.
With the intensity of the match, Kim Pheakdey reckoned the clash with the defending champions as one of Boeung Ket’s greatest matches in the first round of the Cambodian Premier League.
“The clash with Phnom Penh Crown is one of the greatest matches we’ve played,” Kim Pheakdey told boeungketfc.com.
“We did our best, and we gave our all. But we had some tactical problems, which allowed them to score two goals. In general, our boys did really well.
“Both sides created several chances and converted to goals. We played aggressive football with confidence and gave our all to make it an entertaining match for the supporters.”
After the first round of the league season, Boeung Ket are second in the table with six points behind Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng.
Kim Pheakdey believed his side have learned a lot from the first round and are ready to fight in the second round.
“We are six points behind Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng, but in football there’s always hope and chance. We still have many matches to play, so everything is possible. We will always be ready to fight.
“The league is very competitive and gives us a new lesson in each match. We have learned and known our opponents more after the first round of the season.
“We will make some changes to prepare a stronger team for the next rounds.”

Boeung Ket will take on defending champions Phnom Penh Crown in the first Cambodian Classic Match of the season at the Smart RSN Stadium tomorrow.
With six matches down in the Cambodian Premier League, Phnom Penh Crown have won only a single match. They are sixth in the league table with six points behind second-placed Boeung Ket.
Taher Jahanbakhsh, however, has not underestimated Oleg Starynskyi’s side and instead has full respect and admiration for them.
“About Phnom Penh Crown, we have full respect for them, and they are a good team,” said the Boeung Ket center-back.
“The way they play football is good, but we think about our team and will work hard as every game is a final for us.”
Taher joined Boeung Ket this season and has featured in all Boeung Ket’s six Cambodian Premier League fixtures.
He is adapting well to the style of play and enjoying his life at the club that he reckons as a family.
“This is my first season to play here in Cambodia. I feel very happy with Boeung Ket family,” the 32-year-old added.
“I call the club family because we are really the same family, and we play for each other.
“I’m fine here at the club. Football is simple, and it’s not difficult for me to play here. The important thing is I love to play for Boeung Ket.”
Sakari Tukiainen ended his goal drought with a brace against Kirivong Sok Sen Chey in the Cambodian Premier League prior to the New Year break.
Sakari’s double with four further goals, coming from Ajayi Opeyemi, Mustafa Zazai, Taing Bunchhay and Mat Noron, handed Boeung Ket an incredible 6-0 win at home.
The striker, who joined Boeung Ket this season, has already made six appearances for the club.
He pointed out that his goals against Kirivong Sok Sen Chey helped boost his confidence.
“I feel really good to score, and hopefully now the goals start coming in every game,” the Finnish striker told boeungketfc.com.
“I’m very satisfied with our performance and result. Our team played very well and has been playing well in the last few matches. We need to keep the winning streak going.
“It [goal] helps a lot. Sometimes if you don’t score for long time, it can be difficult for strikers because everybody expects goals from you.”
Sakari explained his goal shy due to bad luck and adaptation.
“I think it’s a little bit of bad luck and a little bit of adapting to everything here. It is so much different than in Finland,” he added.
“It was not easy in the beginning, but thanks to Boueng Ket’s staff, coaches and my teammates for making it easier for me. I am really happy to be here.”
Hard work and impressive work rate in the training handed Koy Salim his first Boeung Ket start of the season.
The goalkeeper produced a dazzling performance on his first appearance – keeping a clean sheet in Boeung Ket’s 6-0 win over Kirivong Sok Sen Chey.
Kim Pheakdey was also impressed by the 19-year-old’s character and insisted that he could get more match time should he continue this good work.
“His chance comes from his hard work and work rate in the training,” the Boeung Ket coach told boeungketfc.com.
“Each of our players gets his chance to play, and it depends on his hard work in the training.
“Against Kirivong Sok Sen Chey, Salim did well. Hopefully, he can improve and give Kimhuy a tough challenge for the first place.”
Boeung Ket snatched their third successive Cambodian Premier League win as they ran riot against Kirivong Sok Sen Chey at the Cambodia Airways Stadium last week.
The hosts put six goals past the Takeo-based side without conceding a single goal, though Taing Bunchhay insisted that Boeung Ket were made to work hard for this incredible win.
“It’s a great result and a deserved one, too. We prepared a lot before the match to get this result. It’s good for us in the title race,” the Boeung Ket defender told boeungketfc.com.
“We didn’t underestimate Kirivong Sok Sen Chey. We worked hard in the training and played hard in the match to get three points.”
Bunchhay bagged his first Boeung Ket goal in the thrashing of Kirivong Sok Sen Chey, and a brace from Tukiainen Sakari and three further goals from Ajayi Opeyemi, Mat Noron, and Mustafa Zazai saw Boeung Ket wrap up a convincing 6-0 win.
Last week’s three points move Boeung Ket to second in the Cambodian Premier League table with four points behind league leaders Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng.
Bunchhay is, however, confident that the four-time champions of Cambodia are on the right track for the title race.
“It’s my first goal for the club, so I feel great. Hopefully, I can continue to score for the club and especially for our supporters to put the smile on their face,” added the 19-year-old.
“We lost two matches in a row, but for now we get three straight wins. That could show everyone that we are a strong side that play with strong team spirit. We work hard every day for the club and our supporters.
“Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng are a fantastic team, but our league is quite competitive. They will drop points in some matches.
“We are also a great team. We are more than capable of fighting for the title.”
Mustafa Zazai joined Boeung Ket this season and was impressed by how he was welcomed by the team, where he felt like home.
The midfielder has made four appearances from Boeung Ket’s five Cambodian Premier League matches. He made his Boeung Ket debut in a 3-1 win against NagaWorld in the opening match of the season.
“I enjoy it a lot here. Since day one, I feel very welcomed here. Our relationship is very good. I’m a person who can adapt fast,” said the 28-year-old.
Boeung Ket have won four Cambodian Premier League titles, and the Afghan aims to fire the club to the fifth league triumph this season.
“We have a young team if compared to the other teams in the league, and I like to work and train with them. We work very hard during the week, but also have fun and enjoy the time together.
“I like the commitment of the players here. They listen and like to learn day by day. I believe we have a strong team to fight for the championship.”
